Hydroxyapatite (HAp), Ca10(PO4)6 (OH)2, is a naturally occurring, highly stable mineral form of Calcium Phosphate (CaP) that makes up 70% of human bone and enamel. As a biocompatible, osteoconductive material, it is widely used in dental care (remineralization) and orthopedics (implants) to promote tissue integration, typically exhibiting lower solubility compared to other CaP compounds.
Key Differences and Relationships:
- Definition: Calcium phosphates are a family of materials containing calcium and phosphate ions, while hydroxyapatite is a specific, stable, and naturally occurring type of CaP.
- Composition: HAp includes hydroxide ions (OH-) giving it a specific structure, whereas other CaPs like tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) or dicalcium phosphate do not.
- Stability: HAp is the most stable Calcium Phosphate phase in body fluids, making it less likely to dissolve than other CaP forms like Monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM).
- Biological Function: HAp is the primary component of human bone and teeth, essential for structural integrity.
- Applications: While other CaPs are used as cements or for faster degradation, HAp is generally used where long-term stability and bone binding are required.
